Advance Wars Director Eyes Classic GBA Titles for Future Game Development

WayForward's James Montagna, the director of the recently released Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, has expressed interest in developing games based on classic Game Boy Advance (GBA) titles. In an interview with MinnMax, Montagna shared his enthusiasm for working on lesser-known Nintendo properties, highlighting Kuru Kuru Kururin and Chibi-Robo as prime examples.

While discussing potential projects, Montagna expressed his admiration for the Kuru Kuru Kururin, an action-puzzle game released on GBA in Japan and Europe. Rather than working on top-tier franchises such as Zelda or Mario, Montagna explained that he appreciates the opportunity to explore more obscure titles, as Nintendo already produces high-quality games for their flagship series. He also mentioned interest in exploring Rhythm Heaven and WarioWare, two other offbeat Nintendo properties.

Kuru Kuru Kururin has players navigating a maze as they control a slowly rotating stick called the Helirin. The objective of the game is to guide the Helirin through the maze without colliding with walls or obstacles. The game was among the first six GBA titles added to the Switch Online library in February, accessible through the Expansion Pack tier subscription.

Montagna also expressed interest in developing a game based on the Chibi-Robo series. Chibi-Robo, a platform-adventure game series, has players controlling a tiny robot tasked with helping a family and maintaining their house. Although the series has gained a cult following, it has not seen as much commercial success as other Nintendo franchises.

In conclusion, James Montagna's enthusiasm for exploring lesser-known Nintendo properties like Kuru Kuru Kururin and Chibi-Robo opens the door to possible revitalizations of these classic GBA titles. As the gaming industry continues to evolve, embracing unique and offbeat games may provide a refreshing change of pace for both developers and players. With talented individuals like Montagna pushing the envelope, the future of gaming holds exciting possibilities.
