Twitter is undergoing changes not only when it comes to its CEO but also its features. This time, the platform will allegedly start offering users an option to hide some videos in their tweets behind a paid paywall.
According to the email received by The Washington Post, Twitter is currently working on introducing a new feature that will allow users to hide some video content, so that others could see it only after they pay. Based on the obtained mockups, the feature referred to as ‘Paywalled Video’ will allow users to choose from four price options for videos — $1, $2, $5, and $10. Users that stumble upon such content with paid content will be able to retweet and like the tweets even if they didn’t view them.
At the moment, there is no information on whether this update has something to do with Elon Musk or it has been in development before his acquisition of Twitter. In the last few years, the company has been focused on coming up with various revenue sources besides ads. One such addition was the Super Follows feature that allows users to view content only from subscribers.
It seems that such changes have only been boosted by the presence of Elon Musk as Twitter's CEO. Musk has also announced that the company plans to charge users that get verified on Twitter a subscription of $8 per month. Previously, various public figures could get verified on the platform for free.
Based on the information obtained by Washington Post, the employees of Twitter are currently set to introduce the paywall feature in no more than two weeks. Because of such deadlines, it seems that the teams don’t have much time to evaluate all the risks of this decision. One of the main risks is that some users may charge for copyrighted content.
