Twitter Prepares New Measures Against Misinformation

Hardly is there a social media that can provide only verified information, due to its very essence of it. Twitter, though, is known for its measures of preventing spreading misinformation. And the changes in its policy the service has recently announced hint the new measures will be even more serious in their attempt to separate the sheep from the goats.

Though the new statement makes it clear that it has been triggered by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, this policy is indeed much more versatile. It is described as a part of a broader crusade against misinformation which is surprisingly designed to avoid violating freedom of speech. Instead of simply banning controversial or proven false statements and posts, Twitter will stop recommending or emphasizing such tweets.

Twitter also takes into consideration that misinformation may come from diverse sources. While some channels are indiscreet Kremlin propaganda and affiliated sources, some statements may be spread by good-intentioned users who simply didn’t bother to check the facts. A common case, given how many viral posts are designed to trigger emotional reactions and disable rational thinking. In addition, adds Yoel Roth of Twitter, misinformation can be spread by both sides.

This contradicts statements by Elon Musk who is now the sole owner of Twitter. Probably it’s his views on respecting the freedom of speech that keeps Twitter from removing or preventively banning such posts. Instead, they will be marked as potential (or already refuted) fake news.

Do you think this new policy will work as planned? How do you check the facts if you see something doubtable on Twitter or other social media? Have you ever believed the hype? If you have something to say about this, welcome to the comments! That’s our way to support freedom of speech.
