Many gamers were excited when it was announced that the third installment of the popular Baldur’s Gate series would be coming to PlayStation 5. But what about Xbox Series S gamers? Well, Larian Studios has cleared up why their acclaimed RPG isn’t heading for Microsoft’s latest console.
According to Larian Studios, an Xbox version of Baldur’s Gate 3 has been developed. Still, there is a snag – split-screen support on Series S. Unfortunately, the game won't be available on the Xbox One or Series S consoles. It will still be possible to experience it on PC and PS5, though.
The lack of split-screen support boils down to power issues with the hardware inside Microsoft's budget console. This is because games which require split-screen are usually graphically intensive and thus require higher specs than those found inside an Xbox Series S system. The result being that players can enjoy a smooth experience while playing solo but may encounter problems if they attempt a multiplayer session using split-screen mode.
It should also be noted that this doesn't necessarily mean other titles won't include some form of two player coop for those who own an Xbox Series S system - developers may just need to find alternative ways around these technical limitations to include such features without compromising performance and stability too much for all involved parties.
The good news, though, is that Larian Studios did confirm they are “always looking at ways we can improve our games and bring them out onto more platforms". So while you may not be able to enjoy Baldur’s Gate 3 on your Series S just yet, there might still be hope if enough fans (and developers) continue pushing for it!
Ultimately, it looks like Baldur's Gate 3 skipping out on a release for Xbox Series S isn't due to any kind of exclusivity deal between Sony and Microsoft but rather because of technical issues explicitly related with split-screen support (or lack thereof). Hopefully, with enough dedication from developers and fans alike we'll eventually see an official release somewhere down the line!
